St. Joseph’s day, March 19th, is met with wonder and delight in New Orleans as altars to this saint seem to appear everywhere from small corner stores to larger churches. Why fava beans? St. Joseph is known for relieving hunger. The fava bean is culturally known to have sustained Sicilians through famines.

If you happen to be in New Orleans around this time? Be sure to attend a church service with a St. Joseph’s day altar filled with flowers, food and more! You may see a bowl of these beans on the altar. They will distributed after the service. The belief is that if you carry one of these beans in your wallet? You’ll never run out of food or money!
